Bicycle Patrol
The Solon Police Department Bicycle Patrol consists of four specially trained officers who rotate through this Patrol assignment roughly six months of every calendar year. Their duties consist of random specialized patrol in problem areas of the City and public relations with residents, neighborhoods, and businesses throughout the City. Without the intimidating “shield” of the police cruiser, people in general find approaching the bike officers to be a more casual and personable interaction.
The Bicycle Patrol can be seen on duty for special events such as July 4th Fireworks and Halloween. They have consistent interaction with Solon children through the Safety Town program and various sponsored “bike hikes”.
The Bicycle Patrol, in conjunction with the Solon Recreation Department, hosts bicycle safety rodeos throughout the summer. These rodeos provide youngsters an opportunity to show off their riding skills, brush up on safety rules, and have their bicycle equipment checked by trained bicycle mechanics for safety and functionality. Numerous prizes including new bicycles have been awarded at these functions.
The Bicycle Patrol, in association with the AAA, promotes the Helmet Smart program. Youth found wearing appropriate safety helmets are stopped by the Bicycle Patrol and rewarded with certificates to local participating restaurants.
Bicycle officer collect and maintain bicycle registration information to assist owners of lost or stolen bicycles.
