Gun Locks
In an effort to prevent accidental shootings, the City of Solon is launching an ongoing program of providing free Gun Locks to residents.
Gun Locks can be obtained from the Solon Police Department, 33000 Solon Road from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, simply by showing proof of residency such as a driver's license or utility bill. The first two Gun Locks are free, but up to two additional locks may be purchased for $3.00 apiece.
DO NOT BRING ANY WEAPONS TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT!!!
The City Administration and Police Chief Wayne Godzich are very strongly urging gun owners to do everything possible to prevent tragic accidents with firearms, especially where children are involved. This includes using Gun Locks.
The Gun Locks are designed to fit revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, shotguns and most rifles. The device prevents the firearm from being fired. An instruction pamphlet is included with each lock.
"We're trying to same lives and we know that awareness is half the battle." the Mayor said. "We want people to be aware that these locks can make a difference and can save lives."
In addition to funding the free Gun Lock giveaway program, City Council passed a law requiring that a gun lock be provided on any firearm sold, loaned, transferred or given to someone in this city. Both measures were approved this year after a 14 year old boy shot and killed himself with a handgun. The City is trying to prevent this type of tragedy which has occurred time and again not just in Solon, but all over the country. It is our hope that the installation of a Gun Lock will prevent the firearm from becoming operable, thus saving a life.
