Department Information
The Solon Fire Department was organized in 1924 as a volunteer department and has grown into a modern firefighting/paramedic operation. The City of Solon offers a high level of protection to its citizens by providing a career Fire Department operating from 3 modern fire stations equipped with the highest quality fire equipment. Station 1 is located at 5595 Harper Rd., Station 2 at 6320 SOM Center Rd., and Station 3 at 7401 SOM Center Road. The Fire Administration and Fire Prevention Bureau offices are located in Station 1.
Forty-two firefighters are led by a Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, 3 Battalion Chiefs, and 13 Lieutenants. The Fire department also employs a full-time secretary. The minimum staffing each day is 13 personnel. The fire stations were placed strategically to minimize response times and staffing allow firefighters to control most fires in their infancy before major damage can occur. The majority of the staff are also State of Ohio certified paramedics delivering Advanced Life Support level of care to the ill and injured.
Department equipment includes 4 pumpers, 1 aerial ladder, 4 rescue squads, a hazardous materials unit and other auxiliary equipment including 1 boat used for water rescues on residential ponds. The Solon Fire Department utilizes the latest equipment such as the Thermal Imaging Camera. This camera permits a firefighter to locate victims in the smoke charged atmosphere of a fire. The camera also allows the firefighter to quickly locate the area of the fire that may be hidden in walls which leads to early extinguishment and minimizes the spread of fire.
