A Message from the Mayor

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Angee Shaker to the position of Director of Business and Marketing for the City of Solon. Angee comes to Solon from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District after a successful career as the Executive Director of New School Engagement.

I am thrilled to have Angee as an essential part of team Solon. Her extensive experience in transforming large organizations will enable our community to grow and prosper. A proven leader, she will play a key role in integrating marketing, business development and innovation for the City of Solon. We look forward to her joining us on September 17th.

This has been a busy summer for the Enterprise Zone Committee. Brennan Industries, Inc., located in Solon since 1978, was offered a Job Creation Grant by the Enterprise Zone Committee on July 13, 2018 for the creation of approximately 36 jobs. The company provides hydraulic fittings for a wide range of industries including agriculture, aerospace, oil and gas, marine, material handling equipment, mining, auto, defense, green technologies, and food processing.

City Council also granted site plan and variance approval on August 6, 2018 for the construction of a 23,200 square feet office/warehouse addition onto the company's facility located at 6701 Cochran for their global headquarters. The planned renovation will provide the company more operating space, in addition to their other Solon facility at 30205 Solon Road. Construction is anticipated to begin in the Fall 2018.

Kyntronics, Inc. was also offered a Job Creation Grant by the Enterprise Zone Committee on July 2, 2018 for the creation of approximately 56 jobs. The business specializes in motion control and electro hydraulic actuators for a wide range of industries including, but not limited to, industrial, aerospace, medical equipment, forestry, automotive, and robotic welding. The company will occupy 6565 Davis Industrial Parkway and anticipates occupancy by October 2018.

As always, it is a pleasure and a privilege serving as the Mayor of Solon. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or our dedicated staff members.

2018 Property Reappraisals

Following the sexennial reappraisal and concerns from property owners that their property values have risen, Cuyahoga County has extended the informal appeal process. Residents now have until September 14th to file an informal appeal.

Residents who are concerned that their property values may have been over-estimated can appeal to the Cuyahoga County fiscal office by going online or by calling (216) 443-4663 (HOME).

If you are not able to appeal informally by September 14th, don't worry. You may still file a formal appeal with the County Board of Revision between January 1st and March 31st, 2019.

Residents who have experienced value increases should also be aware that, in 1976, the State passed House Bill 920 which is designed to protect residents against an increase in their taxes just because their property value goes up. For an FAQ on the property reappraisals, please click here.

Solon Fire Department Begins Hydrant Flushing

You may notice Fire Department crews working at fire hydrants and see water running down the street.  Normally we flush water lines through the use of fire hydrants, which is an important preventive maintenance activity. Although it may appear to waste water, the process is part of a routine maintenance program necessary to maintain the integrity of the water system and allowing us to ensure the hydrants are in proper working order. Hydrants that are found to not be in working order are tagged and submitted for repair.

As a result of the line flushing process, residents in the immediate vicinity of the work may experience temporary discoloration of their water. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt and air and does not affect the safety of the water. If you experience discoloration in your water after crews have been flushing in your neighborhood, clear the pipes in your home by running all water faucets for a few minutes.

The same philosophy of water line and hydrant preventive maintenance is one that you should use in your own home to ensure the quality of water inside your home. Your home's water heater should be drained and flushed on a regular basis, according to manufacturer's recommendation to keep it working effectively and efficiently.

Road Work

Throughout the months of September and October, you can expect to encounter our asphalt resurfacing contractor, Chagrin Valley Paving, at various locations throughout the city. Residential streets planned for resurfacing include, Burlwood Drive, Woodsdale Lane, Lake Vista Drive, Woodall Road west of Harper Road, and Glenallen Avenue from Inwood to Aurora Road.

In addition to the various residential streets where resurfacing will affect primarily local traffic, patches or resurfacing of several heavier traveled main and collector streets will affect the commute of many travelers through Solon. These streets include the resurfacing the asphalt portion of Arthur Road, patching of Liberty Road between Aurora Road and Pettibone Road, patching of Harper Road between Bainbridge Road and Aurora Road and a few patches farther south.

SOM Center Road will be patched between State Route 422 and Aurora Road and Bainbridge Road will be improved by patching pavement between Kruse Drive and Cochran Road.

The SOM Center and Harper Road work is planned to be performed at night and on the weekends.

Please drive carefully and allow a little extra time in your travels.

Fall Leaf Collection

The Service Department will begin the curbside leaf collection program on Monday, October 15, 2018. The program will run through Friday, December 14, 2018 weather permitting. We ask that residents place their leaves 3 feet from the curb. City crews will work their way around the city to collect them. Crews will pass through each area several times throughout the collection season.

The Service Department requires that leaf piles NEVER be placed in the roadway; this can cause an unsafe situation for motorists and block storm sewers which will result in flooding issues. City Ordinance (ORD. #1964-660.3) states the following: (c) No person shall deposit any leaves within any public street or sidewalk except on the tree lawn between the sidewalk and the curb.

When placing leaves out for collection they should be raked into a windrow and placed close to but not in the roadway. No brush, small branches or other materials should be mixed in with leaf piles as this material will clog and damage the leaf collection equipment and slow down the collection process. Foreign objects can also be thrown from a machine and potentially harm a worker or motorist.

You can help assist the Service Department by mulching your leaves while mowing your lawn; this will add beneficial soil amendment to your lawn. Additionally, small piles of leaves should be placed into brown craft yard waste bags whenever possible and placed out for collection on your normal rubbish collection day. An additional truck will pick the leaf bags up.

Due to the large volume of leaves that come down in a short period of time, no daily schedule can be followed during leaf collection. The collection of leaves will be made during several trips through the city. Please feel free to contact the Service Department to inquire where city crews are currently collecting. Once the leaf collection program has ended, all leaves must be placed into brown craft yard waste bags and placed out for collection on your normal rubbish collection day.

The Service Department would like to thank residents of Solon for their continued cooperation and ask that you contact the Solon Service Department at 248-5834 for more information about the fall leaf collection program.

Leaves collected are composted, not put in a landfill.

Remember next spring we will generate compost and mulch that is available to Solon Residents. Call us for pricing and availability in the spring of 2018.

If you have questions regarding the leaf collection process feel free to contact Dennis Varga, Solid Waste Manager at (440) 248-5834

Join us for our third and final Town Hall event of the year. The discussion will focus on the Opioid Epidemic.

Feasibility Study for ISP

We will be advertising an RFP for a feasibility study to determine if the City of Solon should become an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to the businesses and residents. If deemed feasible the City could enter the ISP market competing directly against companies such as AT&T and Spectrum to provide bandwidth to homes and places of business. The City receives numerous requests for assistance with Internet service provider issues, both business and residential.

It's the administration's belief that the City may be in a position to build a citywide network that would not only exceed the bandwidth offerings currently available, but that we could do it while providing a level of customer service to our Residents and Businesses indicative of all the other top-level services the City already provides on a daily basis. This study is likely to take 8 to 10 months to complete and would involve things such as calling campaigns, focus groups of residents and business, and other community surveys to compile the finalized report. The feasibility study is budgeted for up to $50,000.
